How much raw food should I feed my dog?

Most adult dogs do well on 2 to 3% of their ideal bodyweight per day. A 20kg dog on 2.5% needs about 500g a day, roughly one 454g chub. Use the calculator on this page and adjust by 10% either way if your dog gains or loses condition.

How much raw should a 30kg dog eat?

At 2.5% of bodyweight a 30kg dog eats around 750g a day, about a chub and a half. Active or working dogs sit nearer 3%, quieter or older dogs nearer 2%.

How much raw food does a puppy need?

Puppies eat more for their size: around 8 to 10% of current bodyweight from weaning, tapering to 5 to 6% at six months and to adult amounts of 2 to 3% by their first birthday. Split the daily amount over three or four meals when they are young.

How do I switch my dog to raw food?

Switch over 7 to 10 days. Start with a single protein such as chicken or turkey, feeding a small portion alongside the current food, and increase the raw share each day. Introduce new proteins one at a time once the stomach has settled.

Should I feed once or twice a day?

Adult dogs are usually fed twice a day. Puppies under six months are better on three or four smaller meals. Split the daily amount evenly between meals.

Is 80/10/10 a complete meal?

Adult dogs

Feed 2 to 3% of your dog’s ideal bodyweight a day, split over two meals. Large dogs sit at the lower end, small and very active dogs at the upper end.

Ideal bodyweight, not current weight: if your dog needs to lose a little, feed for the weight they should be. You are feeding the dog you want, not the dog you have.

Puppies

Puppies eat a much bigger share of their bodyweight than adults, and it falls as they grow.

If you would rather not weigh a growing pup every week, the simpler rule is 2 to 3% of their expected adult weight per day, split into the meals above.

Switching to raw

Most dogs move over in seven to ten days. Go slowly and start with a single protein.

Days 1 to 3

Replace a quarter of the old food with Just Chicken or Chicken Complete. Feed at the usual times.

Days 4 to 7

Move to half, then three-quarters raw. Softer stools for a day or two are normal; loose stools mean slow down.

Day 8 onwards

Fully raw. Introduce a second protein after a settled week, then rotate through the range.

Good to know

Serve cold, not warm — Fridge temperature is fine. Never microwave raw food.
Water — Raw food is about 70% water, so dogs on raw drink less. That is normal.
Treats count — Take treats off the daily amount if your dog is gaining weight.
Tripe — Green tripe smells strong and dogs love it. It is a good first raw food for fussy eaters.
Talk to your vet — Especially for pregnant bitches, dogs with pancreatitis or kidney disease, and dogs on medication.
